Description

IRON MATE™ – Black Finish Restorer & Metal Care

Bring the Black Back.

Iron Mate is a small-batch care product for sound black-finished iron and steel that looks dull, dry, faded, or tired. It enriches the existing appearance without painting over the metal. Apply it lightly and buff away all excess.

Made by My Fireplace Doors LLC in Mustang, Oklahoma using a standardized production formula measured by weight. No turpentine or other solvent is added.

Standard Formula by Weight

  • 95.0% boiled linseed oil
  • 3.0% pure beeswax
  • 2.0% black iron oxide (CI 77499)

The standard formula has been made and used successfully. Ingredient specifications and supplier safety documents are retained as part of the Iron Mate product file.

What Iron Mate Does

  • Renews depth and richness in an existing sound black finish.
  • Buffs to a clean, cared-for appearance when applied sparingly.
  • Helps reduce the dull, dry look caused by ordinary handling and age.
  • Offers a care option before replacing metalwork that still fits and functions correctly.

Appropriate Uses

Use only on a sound, clean, dry, completely cool black-finished iron or steel surface after a hidden-area compatibility test. Appropriate candidates include exterior faces of black-finished fireplace-door frames, black-finished metal screens, iron or steel trim, hearth hardware, and decorative black ironwork away from flame and high heat.

Do Not Use On

Hot, warm, lit, flame-contact, or firebox-interior surfaces; burners, pilot assemblies, gas valves or controls, electrical parts, vents, flues, or chimneys; food-contact surfaces or cookware; glass, brick, stone, tile, grout, concrete, wood, plastic, or fabric; stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, chrome, nickel, galvanized metal, plated or polished metal unless specifically validated; bare or actively rusting metal; peeling, blistered, powdery, cracked, failing, or unknown coatings.

Iron Mate is cosmetic surface care. It is not paint, a rust converter, a structural repair, or a substitute for proper preparation and refinishing.

Directions

  1. Turn the fireplace off. Confirm the fireplace and every treated part are completely cool and unlit.
  2. Clean the surface and allow it to dry completely.
  3. Shake Iron Mate well until the product looks uniformly black. Natural pigment settling can occur.
  4. Test a small hidden area. Continue only if the color, sheen, adhesion, and wipe-off are acceptable after drying.
  5. Put a small amount on a clean, lint-free cloth. Apply a very light, even coat.
  6. Work it into the sound finish, then buff thoroughly with a separate clean cloth until no wet or oily residue remains.
  7. Ventilate and allow at least 24 hours to dry. Cool or humid conditions and a heavy coat can require longer.
  8. Do not return the fireplace to service until the surface is dry, no longer tacky, and product odor has dissipated.

WARNING: COMBUSTIBLE DRYING OIL

Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame during application and curing. OIL-SOAKED CLOTHS CAN SPONTANEOUSLY IGNITE. Immediately place used cloths and applicators in a water-filled metal container with a tight-fitting lid and dispose of them according to local requirements. Do not leave oily materials folded, piled, balled up, or loose in ordinary trash. Avoid eye contact and prolonged skin contact. Do not swallow. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

First Aid

Eyes: Rinse with water for at least 15 minutes. Skin: Wash thoroughly with soap and water. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting; call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or a doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Iron Mate repaint damaged metal?
No. It enriches the appearance of an existing sound finish. It does not replace missing coating or proper refinishing.

Can I apply it while the fireplace is warm?
No. The fireplace and metal must be completely cool and unlit during inspection, cleaning, application, buffing, and curing.

Will it darken the surface?
It is intended to renew depth in appropriate black-finished iron and steel. Always test a hidden area because materials, coatings, age, and condition vary.

How much should I use?
Use a very light coat. More product can delay drying and does not improve the result.
