Finish the fireplace without guessing at its job.
A screen can be an elegant visual layer, a practical ember barrier, or a manufacturer-specific component. Those are different decisions.
Choose from the fireplace outward: its type, opening, hearth, intended use, and the screen’s documented role all matter.
The first distinction
A screen is not automatically a fireplace part.
Freestanding screens are commonly used with open masonry fireplaces. Factory-built fireplaces are different.
On a factory-built fireplace, glass, mesh, barriers, ventilation components, and their clearances may be part of a tested system. Do not remove or replace an original component simply because another screen appears to cover the opening.
Identify the appliance first. Then choose a screen that has a defined purpose.
Screen forms
Start with the form the fireplace actually needs.
Single panel
A restrained, flat profile for an open hearth when coverage, support, and proportion are established for the specific screen.
Folding screen
Angled side panels create presence and support. Its listed overall width is not necessarily the width directly covering the opening.
Hanging mesh
A fireplace-specific curtain system, selected and installed according to the existing fireplace opening and its hardware requirements.
Decorative screen
A visual finish for the hearth. Decorative appearance alone does not establish an ember-control or safety function.
A deliberate selection
Coverage, use, and evidence come before style.

Important: A freestanding spark screen, a decorative screen, and a manufacturer-required barrier are not interchangeable.
