Why we begin with the fireplace
A wrong measurement reaches everyone.
A mismeasured door is not a small clerical mistake. It costs the homeowner time and confidence, forces sellers and manufacturers into preventable exceptions, and can leave a skilled craftsperson holding work that was built faithfully to the wrong information.
The trade has long accepted a certain number of these failures as inevitable. Experience taught us that many are preventable. My Fireplace Doors leans into the work others are tempted to rush: identification, photographs, separate measurements, and direct review before the order moves forward.
Evidence beyond the tape
Measurements make sense only in context.
Two fireplaces can share similar opening dimensions and still require entirely different doors. Four clear views let us see the construction, mounting conditions, appliance details, and manufacturer information that measurements alone cannot reveal.
The whole fireplace
Include the opening, hearth, mantel, surround, nearby wall, and existing doors or screen.
Inside the firebox
Show the floor, side walls, back wall, upper area, panels, vents, controls, and any separate appliance.
The face and edges
Photograph the opening straight on, including metal trim, tracks, mounting points, and surrounding material.
The rating plate
Capture the complete manufacturer label and a close view of the model and serial number. If you cannot find it safely, tell us.
Our measurement standard
Six measurements expose what two can hide.
Fireplace openings are not always square, level, or consistent. One width and one height can conceal the exact variation that decides whether a finished door fits. We record the top, center, and bottom widths, then the left, center, and right heights.
Measure to the nearest one-eighth inch and never average different numbers. Photographs support the measurements, and the written record preserves them. Depth, clearances, mounting conditions, and manufacturer details may be requested when the application requires more proof.

Identification before recommendation
The same dimensions can describe different fireplaces.
Built as part of the structure
Firebrick and masonry construction usually allow the door to be selected around the opening, surrounding material, proportions, and mounting conditions.
A manufactured system
Metal construction, refractory panels, vents, or a rating plate may indicate a factory-built fireplace. Door compatibility can depend on the exact manufacturer and model, not nominal opening size.
A separate unit inside an opening
Gas, wood, pellet, and electric appliances require appliance-specific review. The original fireplace around the unit does not identify the installed appliance.
Never substitute a masonry door for an unidentified factory-built fireplace merely because the opening dimensions appear similar.
