Iron Mate is intended for a sound black finish that has lost some depth and richness but has not failed.

Always test a small hidden area and allow it to dry before treating the visible surface.
Real Iron Mate Results
These photographs show actual Iron Mate applications on finished metal surfaces. Surface condition, the existing coating, preparation, application, and exposure can affect the final appearance and durability. Test a hidden area first and follow the label directions.
Care Is Not Repair.
Iron Mate is not paint, a rust converter, a structural repair, or a substitute for proper preparation and refinishing. It will not repair missing coating, active rust, severe corrosion, pitting, bent metal, broken hardware, or an unsafe fireplace component.
Do not use it on a peeling, blistered, powdery, cracked, failing, bare, actively rusting, or unknown finish.
Use It Only Where It Belongs.
Do not use Iron Mate on hot, warm, lit, flame-contact, or firebox-interior surfaces; burners, pilot assemblies, gas valves or controls, electrical parts, vents, flues, or chimneys; food-contact surfaces or cookware; glass, brick, stone, tile, grout, concrete, wood, plastic, or fabric; stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, chrome, nickel, galvanized metal, or plated or polished metal unless the specific surface has been validated.
A Very Light Coat Is Enough.
- Turn the fireplace off and confirm every treated part is completely cool and unlit.
- Clean the surface and allow it to dry completely.
- Shake Iron Mate until the product looks uniformly black.
- Test a hidden area and evaluate it after drying.
- Apply a very light coat with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Buff thoroughly with a separate clean cloth until no wet or oily residue remains.
- Ventilate and allow at least 24 hours to dry. Cool or humid conditions and a heavy coat can require longer.
- Do not return the fireplace to service until the surface is dry, no longer tacky, and product odor has dissipated.
Oil-Soaked Cloths Can Spontaneously Ignite.
WARNING: COMBUSTIBLE DRYING OIL. Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame during application and curing. Immediately place used cloths and applicators in a water-filled metal container with a tight-fitting lid and dispose of them according to local requirements. Do not leave oily materials folded, piled, balled up, or loose in ordinary trash. Keep Iron Mate out of reach of children and pets.
The Door May Be Fine. The Finish Changed.
If the door still fits, the hardware works, the glass is sound, and the finish remains intact, a careful appearance-restoring treatment may make more sense than replacement.
If the finish has failed, repair or refinishing comes first. We would rather tell you Iron Mate is not right for the job than sell it as something it is not.
